Define how to work with environments
Today, many organizations have a global presence and provide services to customers in multiple regions, countries, or continents. This aspect can create the need for different types of interactions based on factors such as the availability of different data and resolutions based on departments or locations. Your organization might need to deploy similar agents in different regions that interact with systems and data specific to those areas. Microsoft Copilot Studio supports this situation by allowing you to create agents in different environments and switch between them.
Environments represent a space to store, manage, and share your organization’s business data. Each agent you create is stored in an environment. Items such as model-driven apps and canvas apps, as well as Power Automate flows, are also stored in environments. Each environment can have different roles, security requirements, and target audiences. Individual environments are not created in Microsoft Copilot Studio; they are created in a separate location. Once you have created an individual environment, Microsoft Copilot Studio agents can be created in that environment.
Depending on business needs, organizations can use environments in several ways, including:
- By department – By creating an environment that corresponds to specific organizational teams or departments, the agents created contain information relevant to that audience.
- By location – Since the data displayed may differ by geographic region, you can define separate environments for different global subsidiaries of your company.
You only need multiple environments if your company is global and you support regions with specific privacy and data storage requirements, such as China, Germany, the EU, Singapore, etc. In this case, you must establish environments for each region, as you would for any other service that uses and stores data for customers in that region.
Create environments
The first time you sign in to Microsoft Copilot Studio and create a new agent, a default environment is created. Unless otherwise specified, all other agents are created in the default environment. If additional environments are needed, for example for different regions, organizational needs, or other circumstances, they can be added through the Microsoft Power Platform admin center.
